During Summer 2016 SFMOMA’s Open Space invited Marcella to participate in the publication's columnists-in-residence program. In their own words "Open Space supports experimental approaches to writing and media in response to art, recognizing the long history of literary and technological innovation in our region. We advocate for the continued vitality of the greater Bay Area’s diverse mix of artistic expression."
The program consists of the invited writers contributing pieces that are published without editorial oversight from Open Space or SFMOMA. The program is "a unique publishing experiment within the field of museum institutions; indeed, it is rare in any case."
For her residence Marcella chose to interview artists whose practice offer a subjective parallel to the immigrant experience. Marcella interviewed artists that through writing, visual media and music composition have in common aiming for a third space in which new possibilities can exist. Their practices map new locales, create new borders and straddle in-between lines.
